How to review literature and write literature review?

August 18, 2010 by supyanhussin

Many students have problems with how to do literature review and how to write literature review.  Some tips:

  • What to look for? journals, books, seminar papers, thesis, monographs, technical research reports
  • Where to look for? online and offline; e-library and library
  • How old is the literature? The rule of thumb says it should be less than 10 years old, but for technology related papers, it should be less than 5 years old. Classical materials should be more 20-30 years of age.
  • How to write? The review should be divided into 2 parts: theoretical discussion (theories, models, approaches) and past studies (research reports)
